Title: Family Support for Sensory Needs

Credentials: SEN Law Level 3

What problem do you strive to overcome?

Children are left to unlawfully struggle at school. I work with the families, identifying the needs of the child, suggesting the adjustments needed to ensure physiological and safety needs are met, helping the child to feel supported in accessing social and academic areas.

Those with sensory processing irregularities can often be seen to go from 0-100 with no warning, the child that just can’t seem to tolerate day to day demands and will often get misunderstood for their actions.

The environment is all around us, noisy, smelly and overwhelming. For those of us that struggle with processing sensory feedback it can be really hard to make through the day. Through screening techniques we evaluate all 8 senses, identify if the sense is over or under (seeking or avoiding) what this means and how it can be supported. Whilst there is no cure, we can make the world more accessible with preparation and exercises to help support our internal guidance systems.

Experience:

My Journey to Advocacy for Children in Schools.

A Personal Story of Struggle and Transformation.

My journey through the educational system was fraught with challenges. I struggled immensely during my school years and often felt that the system had let me down. The thought of having children of my own was daunting, as I feared they might face similar hardships. Nevertheless, I managed to build friendships and pursued higher education, attending both college and university.

A few years later, as my biological clock began to tick, I welcomed my children into the world. They have been the greatest teachers in my life, showing me the importance of advocacy. I realised that if I didn't stand up for them, no one else would. Our children need a voice, a champion who will fight for their right to a quality education.

Today, schools are grappling with numerous challenges. They are under-equipped, lacking in necessary skills and resources, and are constantly under pressure to deliver results. The ever-increasing demands of the curriculum imposed by the government exacerbate these issues, leaving little room for holistic development and individual attention.

Drawing from my own experiences and the lessons my children have taught me, I am now committed to using my knowledge and experiences for the greater good. My goal is to support schools and families across West Yorkshire, advocating for better resources, more inclusive policies, and a more compassionate approach to education.

Together, we can make a difference. By working hand in hand with educators, parents, and the community, we can ensure that every child has the opportunity to thrive in a supportive and enriching educational environment. Our children deserve nothing less, and it is our duty to provide them with the best possible foundation for their future.

Something a little different about me.

To help me with my sensory differences, I always have my loop earplugs with me, spare hairband and can often be found eating!
